Type: Guest House
‘Maplestone’ is situated amongst a unique muddle of manors, mills and cottages in the historic Mendip market town of Shepton Mallet in Somerset. It is close to the bustling centres of Bath, Bristol, Wells and Glastonbury and is surrounded not only by beautiful countryside, in an area of outstanding beauty, but by a wealth of interesting places to visit, amongst them, the Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Longleat and the National Trust property of Stourhead. Further afield lie the joys of Dorset, Exmoor, Stonehenge and the Cotswolds.
‘Maplestone’ has a charming walled cottage garden. It is just half an hours drive south of Bath and near a handy park and ride to leave the car when visiting the city. The Grade II listed house was originally a terrace of small 17th Century weaver’s stone cottages which have been cleverly converted so that the cottages now inter lead in an interesting way and provide extremely comfortable and spacious bed and breakfast accommodation. The split nature of the building creates the private feel of a ‘guest wing’ and the outside cottage has it’s own entrance.
Inside the house there are beamed ceilings and white walls. Pale colours are enhanced by lovely paintings by the owner, Gillian. There is an eclectic mix of styles in the rooms which gives the property a quirky feel. Bedrooms are deeply comfortable and very quiet and the delicious breakfasts rely on local produce. The sausages and eggs are directly from the Wells market. There is ample parking and local pubs and restaurants are within walking distance.
